I am participating in a haiku challenge. Fun!
The gauntlet for this one was thrown down by Morgan (https://booknvolume.com/2016/10/18/lavish-dailyhaikuchallenge/) to write a new haiku every day, for a frickin’ year.
I started on 10/19/2016.
Using the following English pattern for the haiku:
5
7
5
That’s three lines, with the following syllable counts:
Five syllables
Seven syllables
Five syllables
Planning to post each day’s effort on this page. Also will post some on Poet’s Corner, a poetry blog most awesome.
A quick word on content: these are lexical effusions, written in the moment, and for entertainment. They shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Same goes for anything on this blog. Have fun or stick it in your buns.
1/10/2017
Time to start the day.
A bracing cup of Earl Grey
Sets me on my way.
1/9/2017
The weekend is done.
Clarion call of the sun;
A new week begun.
1/8/2017
Difference between
An institution and gang?
How they wave their wang.
1/7/2017
No one has a right
To invade your privacy.
That is worth a fight.
1/6/2017
A leaky toilet,
Bleeding precious liquid gold.
Not enough buckets.
1/5/2017
A gang is a gang,
Regardless of its methods.
Still social poison.
1/4/2017
Anyone who claims
Rhyming is a wrongful act,
Is surely quite whack.
1/3/2017
And speaking of poop,
Some poop speakers surround me.
Or is it just me?
1/2/2017
Problems are like poop;
Better to sit and dump them,
Then up and regroup.
1/1/2017
The new year starts fresh
Like new-born babe in the flesh.
Let’s grain from chaff thresh.
12/31/2016
Raise a glass and toast
To what’s become, yet to come.
Last year’s nigh a ghost.
12/30/2016
Whispers in a motel,
Secret tauntings just for me.
Is this a movie?
12/29/2016
Creeps and whisperings;
This is new territory.
Just like the last one.
12/28/2016
Already creepy,
My neighbors unfurl curses
Familiar and new.
12/27/2016
The heavens parting?
A diesel engine starting?
That’s grandpa farting.
12/26/2016
Brand new battle calls,
On brand-new playing field–
It’s Titanfall 2.
12/25/2016
Friends and family–
They’re a gift you can’t return.
A good policy.
12/24/2016
Wrapped presents beckon.
Shouting harkens from upstairs.
It feels like Christmas.
12/23/2016
Spirit is lifting,
Sound of angel songs drifting.
Done with the gifting.
12/22/2016
Last-minute shopping,
My energy is dropping
But heart is hopping.
12/21/2016
That’s a fine caboose;
Yule-log train is on the loose.
Here’s a Christmas goose.
12/20/2016
Christmas tree is trimmed,
Newly lit and bauble-limbed.
Let hot mug be brimmed.
12/19/2016
Hark, can you hear it?
The call of Christmas spirit.
Let’s grin and beer it.
12/18/2016
Riddle of ages,
Gordian knot of gifting.
It’s tough to hack it.
12/17/2016
Visiting in-laws.
Going to see the Nutcracker.
And her husband too.
12/16/2016
Morning bitterness,
Leeching from the daily grind.
Ah, that’s good coffee.
12/15/2016
Hang the mistletoe.
Watch the ladies come and go.
Step in from the snow?
12/14/2016
Christmas coming fast;
Soon the day will join the past.
Plan for the present(s).
12/13/2016
Losing weight’s no thing.
Every time my bottom sings
My last meal takes wings.
12/12/2016
You there with torches,
Monster is as monster does.
Don’t blame your victim.
12/11/2016
The grown-up bully’s
Favorite line: “It’s not high school.”
No, this is grade school.
12/10/2016
A turd’s still a turd
No matter how you sell it.
I can still smell it.
12/09/2016
Tongues intertwining
Dance in primal ecstasy.
Place another log.
12/08/2016
Discussing action items;
Meeting goes on infinitum.
Fart just to spite ’em?
12/07/2016
Game psychological,
Someone’s pathological.
But it isn’t me.
12/06/2016
Why is it haters
Are the first to take offense?
Need a taller fence.
12/05/2016
Monday’s here again.
Time to be professional.
Or at least pretend.
12/04/2016
Has my haiku well
Expended all its water?
Then I’ll drink saki.
12/03/2016
A moment of zen
In seventeen sylllables?
I’m zen-less today.
12/02/2016
Was a believer,
Now an Xbox One griever–
No DramaFever?!!
12/01/2016
My neighbor, the one
Who stalks me, calls me “outlaw”.
Say what? Project much?
11/30/2016
You creeps who stalk me,
Calling me an animal:
Have you a mirror?
11/29/2016
My Stasi neighbors
Trample on my privacy.
What country is this?
11/28/2016
Weekend got away;
I missed the sales on Sunday.
Ah, Cyber Monday.
11/27/2016
Hearty fun-filled feast.
Even more satisfying?
Time with grandchildren.
11/26/2016
A new day has dawned.
First fart of the day has spawned.
Wind on golden pond.
11/25/2016
Turkey Day is done;
Bargain shopping has begun–
In search of Xbox One!
11/24/2016
It’s time for feasting,
And this turkey is ready.
Prepared for stuffing!
11/23/2016
Such a lame turkey,
Flightless gobbling others’ dreams.
Why don’t you get stuffed?
11/22/2016
Short week but busy;
Head is up a turkey’s butt.
It’s the holidays!
11/21/2016
How the time has flown:
Thanksgiving week already!
Food and family.
11/20/2016
Repeating nonsense
Does not finally make it true–
It’s just more nonsense.
11/19/2016
Badgering others
Is a sport among the low.
What is your excuse?
11/18/2016
What utter madness,
If you could hear me thinking.
A madness all yours.
11/17/2016
Even true today:
Tall fences make good neighbors.
But fences have holes.
11/16/2016
The village rose up,
With torches the monster chased,
Burning out of fear.
11/15/2016
Reputation’s naught
When fostered by hostile lot–
Then it’s just rudeness.
11/14/2016
It’s Monday morning–
So soon you come back to me.
Could you not sleep in?
11/13/2016
If faceless voices
Whisper harm and evil tidings,
Should they be believed?
11/12/2016
Every liberty
Starts with someone’s sacrifice,
Courage to say “no”.
11/11/2016
Today, both thanks and praise
To whom freedom help upraise–
Our brave veterans.
11/10/2016
The bully complains
When the victim won’t stay down.
Who is the weak one?
11/09/2016
At last, it’s over;
We voters made our choices.
Now a new day “Don”s.
11/08/2016
It’s election day.
One will win, the others lose.
Up to us to choose.
11/07/2016
I woke in a fog
Covering all the world but me.
Gentle way to start.
11/06/2016
There’s neighborhood watch.
Then there’s watching your neighbors.
The first one’s better.
11/05/2016
Mindless chatter grates
Like nails on a chalkboard.
My cat’s purr restores.
11/04/2016
Persistence alone
Is not an equal of truth.
It’s just blustering.
11/03/2016
A morning trumpet
Blasts its call from down below.
Relieved, I now arise.
11/02/2016
A relationship
Is closer when built on trust.
Fear builds calluses.
11/01/2016
“Attitude” is just
Another word for posture.
You get my leaning?
10/31/2016
Spooks all around me,
Feeding off my sanity.
Must be Halloween!
10/30/2016
Rainy afternoon.
I don’t feel any sadness,
Merely peaceful ease
10/29/2016
Saturday morning,
Time for catch-up or for play.
But first, I’ll sleep in.
10/28/2016
Travelling from home.
There’s always lots of baggage.
It’s good to leave it.
10/27/2016
Poetry’s not a crime.
It’s human language singing.
The crime is silence.
10/26/2016
It’s Wednesday morning;
Little done and much to do.
So let’s get humping.
10/25/2016
Prying and harangues:
That’s not a conversation.
Why not talk instead?
10/24/2016
Korean drama:
Fresh and sentimental fare.
Rivals Hollywood.
10/23/2016
It’s just a button
But oh, so gratifying.
I really like Likes!
10/22/2016
Walls have a purpose,
As too does simple silence–
And yet you listen.
10/21/2016
Predicament harsh,
Impossible conundrum–
Gird for harder climb.
10/20/2016
Neighbor’s morning squall
Exacting its daily toll.
Head to work for peace.
10/19/2016
Sun’s opprobrium,
Glaring summer scrutiny.
Fall breeze now soothes me.
OK I LOVE your post. I had no idea I threw a gauntlet 0:)
Today’s haiku, dripping with Sarcasm, made me literally LOL!

Thanks! I decided to follow convention in terms of the commonly used metrical form (5-7-5) and of having a shift or turn in the narrative at line three, but without adhering strictly to nature themes. 🙂
